“What Comes Next Is the Future is a documentary film about the web created by Bearded founder Matt Griffin. It is the story of Tim Berners-Lee’s creation – how it came to be, where it’s been, and where it’s going – as told by the people who build it.”  – futureisnext.com

For the past few years Designxri has held Design Week RI which is a week of events that are intended to bring the designers of Rhode Island together and celebrate the strong design culture that Rhode Island has. Recently I had a chance to attend one the events that was hosted at the Cable Car Cinema in Providence. The focus of this event was a documentary called ” What Comes Next Is The Future”, this documentary took you through the progression and evolution of the web.

What was interesting about this documentary was who they interviewed. It ranged from Tim Berner-Lee the creator of the internet, to even John Resig the creator of jQuery. Throughout the documentary we had the chance to hear from these industry leaders, on what their perception of the web was and how the different styles or elements have changed the web for the better. They touched upon topics such as Tables, Flash, CSS, Web standards and talked about how empowering the web is due to the fact that we all can make changes to it. This could be in the form of a new coding language, sharing a new solution, or even just publishing a new idea to reshape the web.

For me this was a great learning experience, due to the fact that it help me realize a few things such as:

  1. The web is still fairly new
  2. The web is still evolving to this day
  3. The web is always going to keep evolving
  4. We still do not have all the answers when it comes to the web
